This work brings together an image of the canal at Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent (the route for my daily exercise in lockdown) with a photograph taken at Kingsbarns Beach in Fife (East Coast of Scotland) on my last family seaside holiday. By physically stitching photographs of these locations together, Qanat creates the illusion of one tributary flowing directly into the other. Bordering felt colour bars are sewn into raw canvas that has been stained with ink and acrylic washes, accentuating the notion that the top half of the picture plane is seeping into the bottom. The title is a Middle Eastern term prevalent in Frank Herbert’s Dune series, meaning 'a sloping underground canal constructed to lead water through a desert’.
